Quick Review - Zodiac
Zodiac
Director:
David Fincher (Fight Club)
Story:
Based on the Robert Graysmith books about the real life notorious
Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorised San Francisco with a string of
seemingly random murders during the 1960s and 1970s.
What I Liked About it:
* As expected, the direction by Fincher is amazing.
* There are scenes that were so tense, they had me grabbing onto the
arm rest. (The basement scene and the lake picnic scene
particularly nail biting).
* Apart from the odd digital give-away, it has a great 70s feel. The
music, costumes, locations etc. all help to make it as realistic
as possible.
* The sound of a phone ringing has never sounded so terrifying.
Although it is almost 3 hours long, its flies by. For a film that
is mostly dialogue scenes, this was really surprising.
* Even though this is Finchers second serial killer pic, its
approached from a completely different angle, so he doesn't just
deliver a copy of Se7en.
* All the acting is top notch, Jake Gyllenhaal's boy scout who
slowly sinks into obsession, Robert Downy Jnr's boozy but
brilliant journalist and Mark Ruffalo's burnt out detective are
all brilliant to watch.
* It also contains some welcome comical moments.(I found the
interview scene with a potential suspect particularly funny, in
which the suspect keeps incriminating himself)
What I Didn't Like About It:
* With so much going on, it can sometimes get hard to follow what is
happening.
* The final scene, in which a surviving victim points out who he
thinks is Zodiac was probably not needed, as the scene before that
shows you all you need to know.
The Verdict:
The first brilliant film of 2007. A tense and thoughtful serial
killer/journalist movie that is worlds apart from Finchers last serial
killer film Se7en. One of those rare films where you actually forget
you in a cinema watching a film. Brilliant!!
