Signs of the Zodiac
These reliefs of signs of the zodiac are from the 12th century church
of Saint-Austremoine, in France.
Medieval Catholics were much closer to nature than most people today,
and had a much greater appreciation for the changing months and
seasons.
This appreciation was often expressed by the use of the zodiac in
churches and in books of hours.
This would come as a shock to most internet "Catholics", whose only
exposure to the zodiac, and astrology, comes from newspaper
horoscopes.
These same sort have a very much distorted view of what the world of
the Middle Ages was actually like.
You'll learn a damn sight more about medieval life by reading Chaucer
